Traceroute

If you find your site or service you are trying to contact unavailable, it may be caused by a server or network failure but is most often caused by an internet failure somewhere between your computer and the server. Running a traceroute will help you determine where the problem starts.

1. How to Run Traceroute from Windows


Command is as follows:

tracert example.com

  1. Click on Start icon windows start and select All Programs > Accessories and then Command Prompt
  2. In the box type ‘cmd’ (without the quotes) and click OK. image
  3. At the command prompt that pops up in the black box type ‘tracert domain.ext’ (replace domain.ext with your domain name and extension). It may take a few seconds but will give a traceroute from your computer to the destination you typed in. In this example we typed ‘tracert google.com’ without the quotation marks.image
  4. To copy the results, right click on the window and choose ‘Select All’. This will make the box contents turn white with black text and copy the contents to your clipboard . Paste to a file and send us the results.


2. How to Run Traceroute from Linux



Command is as follows:

traceroute example.com
1. Enter Linux Terminal (CTRL+ALT+T)
2. In terminal type 'traceroute domain.ext’ (replace domain.ext with your domain name and extension). It may take a few seconds but will give a traceroute from your computer to the destination you typed in. In this example we typed ‘traceroute google.com’ without the quotation marks.image
3. Copy the output of command into email or take a snapshot and send to us.

3. How to Run Traceroute from Mac


Command is as follows:

traceroute example.com
1. Navigate to /Applications/Utilities and double-click on Terminal.
2. In terminal type 'traceroute domain.ext’ (replace domain.ext with your domain name and extension). It may take a few seconds but will give a traceroute from your computer to the destination you typed in. In this example we typed ‘traceroute google.com’ without the quotation marks.
3. Copy the output of command into email or take a snapshot and send to us.
